For my second shakedown hike I again chose the Lost Creek Widerness. Different route of course. Why another shakedown? New stuff to test out! On my first shakedown I confirmed that my sleep system was inadequate, water filter to slow, and I need new shoes. All would be tested on this trip.
The hike was a monster, up, up, and up, for four miles to the top of Bison peak. The scenery did not disappoint, beautiful. At the top of Bison I was hoping to take in the scenery as I had a lunch break but it was not to be. Thunder! I was close to running as I scurried down below trendline. The rest of the day was a series of ups and downs, same gorgeous scenery, until I hit McCurdy park. It was a very nice evening, no rain, very little wind. The day ended at 3500ft of climb and around 10 miles. I was exhausted, so setup camp, had dinner, found some water and then hit the hay.
The morning was crisp and clear. Sleeping pad worked out well. I was comfortable but could not sleep, more a mental thing than the pad. Breakfast, brushed my teeth, packed up, and hit the trail. Just headed back the way I came bit this time I was able to hang out atop Bison peak. Words and pictures cannot describe it. Beautiful. Spent about an hour up there and then headed backbto the Jeep, mission accomplished. Oh and of course a storm had to roll in 2 miles before I was done. Ug.
