This day I was worried. Tired from the previous threes days of hiking now, I need to go up and over a pass. Up and over before any storms roll in. So it was up and at it early, breakfast, pack, and hit the trail before 7AM. I really wanted to get up and over Georgia pass before noon but I also needed to go at a slower pace then before , conserve energy.
So on the way I met a group of four adults with a four year old boy. They were hiking the entire segment 6, which is around 32 miles. The little guy even had his own REI backpack containing a stuffed animal to keep him company. All I could think of is how brave the adults were. Quite a task taking a four year old backpacking, and in the mountains no less. I saw them of and on during the day and he seemed like your typical four year old, “I’m tired” one minute, then the next minute full of energy and running past you. Good luck to them!
This is a very popular trail with mountain bikers, there were quite a few of them. Most very polite, friendly, and really happy to be out there. Talked to a few of them, mentioned I had done a lot of road biking and had tried a little mountain biking but thought I’d end up killing myself on some sharp turn on a cliff side. One did mention that I should head over to Bear Creek, the trails over there are good for beginners. Maybe and activity for next year!
Anyway, great day. Made it over the pass with energy to share, 13 miles and 2800 ft. Had the pleasure of camping next to a swamp with another hiker, Bee. She had done 20 miles that day. Unfathomable to me!
Happy day – good for you Dean!
Thanks Carrie!
Awesome Dean, thanks for the updates. Love hearing about your adventure. Sat images looks like there are quite a few intersecting trails. Are you navigating by map, GPS or blazes?
Hi Todd. The trail is very well marked with signage and blazes that are the Colorado Trail symbol. In addition I’m using the app know as Guthook Guides.
Dean looks like you got some great views that day! Awesome buddy, keep going, we’re all loving the updates!
