Day 10 – Fri Aug 14 2020

Drips was determined to get his third segment in before heading home. I needed that segment also so we hatched a plan. We would take two cars, leave one at the end of the segment then drive the other to the start. A typical segment hiker maneuver, kind of a pain, but it works. We positioned one car at the end of segment 3, the Rolling Creek Trailhead, and then drove the other to the beginning of segment 3 Little Scraggy Trailhead. We were on the trail by 9:30.

The weather in general was great except for the smoke. Nasty, could smell and see it. Views were very marginal due to the visibility but we were able to get a few shots.

Hiking was great and made real good time without the burden of 40 pound packs. Water was again an issue though, every stream we came to was dry. We did have 5 liters of water between us but we were concerned that it would not last. Two big guys of a certain age and at altitude, drink a lot of water! Luckily we did come across a nice stream and were able to tank up and camel up

We did come upon these strange piles of wood, had no idea why they were there. It looked like a bunch of Bonfires read to go. We figured it must be some kind of fire management thing. Just looked odd.

Overall , of the first three segments, this was the nicest. Great trail with a rolling up and down type of hiking an lots of fairly open spaces under the trees that would provide great camping opportunities. We did 12.77 miles and 1600 feet of climb.

Despite the smoke, looks like you got some great views! How were the sunsets? A silver lining of these big wildfires is some of them yield spectacular sunsets. From where you are (just east of paradise, from my calculations) you might get some pretty fantastic sunsets…
At least I hope so. Stay safe!
