Today was town day for pretty much everyone in camp. Get to town! Real food, real beds! The race was on to make it to the trail head for a free shuttle ride into Lake City. Eleven miles by 12:30, no way I was going to make that so took my time and was going to hitch when I got there.
One big problem, no place to stay. Had reservations at a hotel but it was two days away, I was early. Cherie and I tried multiple methods to contact them to no avail. Wierd, so get into town and see what we can find. Worse case, the hostel. It was suppose to be nice but a bunk room was not my idea of fun.
Nice dry tent in the morning, yeah! Packed up and started the climb up to Snow Mesa. Nice buck surprised me right by the trail on the way up, cool thing to see in the early morning. I was looking forward to a little climbing and a long hike on top of a nice flat mesa. Little did I know that mesas are not flat but rolling hills. It was interesting terrian.
Met a triple crowner trying to finish a few pieces of trail she missed, kinda in awe, definitely older than me and loving it, her trail name was Pooh Bear. Had a Winnie the Pooh hat.
Got through the “flat” part of the mesa and started down to the trail head. On the way down Two Mile caught up with me and watched as I slipped and pulled something on my right quad, ug! It was a nasty downhill, rocky and slippery. Arrived at the trail head and watched Two Mile work his hitch hiking magic, had to wait maybe five minutes and then we were in the back of a pickup on the way to town.
Two Mile offered to share the place he had with me and I took him up on it. It was an odd little cabin at the Texan. I did sleep on the floor but it was inside, dry, and I was pretty comfortable.
This is 4WD country Two Mile spotted a rental place and kept talking about renting one. It was an omen of things to come. A few beers at the local brewery, some real food, and off the bed.
Love the reports…glad it’s been drier! Wonderful pics…keep’er moving Dean! You’re getting closer! 🙂
