Day 16 (36) – Fri Aug 13th 2021

It was going to be a long day and there was some threat of storms so was up early and hiking in the dark. I thought the sheep would be making noise all night but they had disappeared so it was a nice quiet night. Even more hikers had come in during the night and I guess there was easily 25 of them in the area. It was hard finding my way out to the trail in the dark and trying to avoid all the tents.

Long day with not much water available but well worth it, beautiful. The target was Cattaract Lake.

Made it there nice and dry and set up camp. There are actually two lakes upper and lower, I setup at the one closest to the trail. It’s a little higher the the big one but we were surrounded by ridges and such so I really wasn’t worried about storms and lighting.

Hung out chatting and eating dinner with the other hikers when the temperature suddenly dropped and wind picked up. We all scattered to get everything put away and get to our tents. What happened next was one of a few epic storms I’ve ridden out in a tent. Hail, rain, thunder, pretty crazy. My tent was flopping all over the place but held up well. In fact everyone at camp made it through the storm without any big issues, even the lady that was screaming.

Hail piled up around the tents.

As the storm calmed down and turned to sprinkles one of the guys came by and asked if I had any hand warmers, no but why? Turns out a hiker had been caught up high in the storm. Freezing, blue lips, couldn’t move her fingers. The hikers got into motion, got her pack off, set up her tent, made her hot tea, took care of her until she was warm and dry. It was people at their best, complete strangers helping someone in need. If you ever need to refresh your faith in humanity, come out here for a few weeks.
